Trauma-Informed Somatic Therapy in Calgary

Somatic therapy is a gentle, body-centered approach that recognizes how our experiences live not only in our minds, but in our bodies as well. When stress, trauma, or overwhelm become difficult to process through words alone, the body can hold onto those experiences in ways that affect how we feel and move through daily life. At Beyond Roots Counselling, trauma-informed somatic therapy offers a supportive space to reconnect with your body, regulate your nervous system, and explore healing at a pace that feels safe and respectful.

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy focuses on the connection between the body, the nervous system, and emotional wellbeing. Rather than relying only on talking, this approach gently brings attention to physical sensations, body awareness, and nervous system responses.

Through guided awareness and grounding techniques, somatic therapy helps you notice how your body responds to stress or past experiences. Over time, this awareness can support nervous system regulation, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of connection with yourself.

Somatic Therapy Might Be Helpful If You’re Experiencing…

Somatic therapy can be supportive if you are navigating experiences such as:

  • Feeling stuck in patterns of stress, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm

  • Healing from trauma or abuse

  • Chronic tension, fatigue, or a sense of disconnection from your body

  • Feeling constantly on edge or unable to fully relax

  • Navigating life transitions and wanting to feel more grounded and present

Somatic therapy creates space to gently reconnect with your body’s signals and responses, helping you build a deeper sense of safety and regulation over time.

My Approach to Somatic Therapy

At Beyond Roots Counselling, somatic therapy is approached with care, curiosity, and respect for your nervous system. I show up as myself and invite you to do the same.

Our work moves slowly and collaboratively. Together, we notice what your body is communicating and explore ways to support regulation and grounding. There is no pressure to relive difficult experiences or move faster than your system is ready for.

You are always in control of the pace of the work. My role is to help you feel supported, safe, and connected as we gently explore the relationship between your body, emotions, and experiences.

Somatic Therapy and Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed somatic therapy recognizes that healing happens best when the nervous system feels safe.

Rather than pushing into overwhelming memories or sensations, we work within your window of tolerance, helping your body gradually build a sense of stability and resilience. This approach prioritizes consent, pacing, and awareness so that the work remains supportive and empowering.

Over time, somatic therapy can help restore a sense of balance, safety, and connection with your body.

What to Expect in Somatic Therapy

Early sessions focus on building connection and helping you feel comfortable in the space. We begin by understanding what brings you to therapy and what support might feel most helpful right now.

Somatic therapy may include gentle practices such as noticing physical sensations, grounding exercises, breath awareness, or simple movements that help regulate the nervous system.

Everything is offered as an invitation rather than a requirement. We move slowly, checking in along the way so the process feels steady and supportive.

How We Get Started

Beginning somatic therapy doesn’t require you to explain everything right away. We start by getting to know each other, building trust, and creating a space where you feel safe and supported.

If you’re curious about somatic therapy or wondering if it might be a good fit for you, a free 15-minute consultation is a gentle place to begin. We can talk about what you’re hoping for, explore any questions you may have, and discuss what the next steps could look like.

When you’re ready, I’m here to walk alongside you — moving at a pace that feels steady, supportive, and right for you.
